Ah, Beta.

Here we go! We’re finally live with a pretty comprehensive revamp of our services. Our market testing last year taught us an amazing amount, and this is the result. Is it Cauzoom 2.0? Maybe. Probably. Who knows. Doesn’t matter – we’re extremely excited.

No, really. This is going to be exCEPtionally cool.

What you can expect from the new site

First of all, Cauzoom still does everything we did last year: project funding, online contribution processing, web-simple promotion, cause marketing. Here’s the big difference:

You don’t have to do it all at once.

We heard a lot of that from our causes last year: “I want to take advantage of project funding, but not necessarily the cause marketing piece.” Or “can we do the online fundraising without the deadline of a project?” Our answer: yes.

The big difference is that Cauzoom is moving solidly into the cause-marketing space. Now, after about five minutes effort, any cause (yes, ANY cause, large or small) can get into the cause marketing game – sell stuff to raise money. And now (for the first time anywhere that we’ve seen) any business can get into the same game with five minutes’ effort. Restaurants? Check. Local hardware stores? Check. Artists? Crafters? Magicians? Check. Kids who want to rake leaves and contribute some money to their scout troop? Moms willing to do babysitting for the church? Check. Sell ANYTHING to support the cause you love. We handle the transaction processing and all the details – you redeem the printable voucher. Done.

And here’s the REALLY exciting part: sign up and we’ll send you an email every once in a while with things you can buy to support YOUR cause. Not the one we pick, not the one the marketing agency picked: the one YOU pick. It’s kind of like a Groupon, only rather than pocketing the discount you send it to the farmer’s market or animal shelter or nursery school around the corner.

A Heads-Up

  • Like any beta, Cauzoom isn’t finished. We’re eager to hear your feedback and comments – especially around things that don’t work correctly or even the way you imagine they should work. Please send your feedback to us at feedback@cauzoom.com – early and often!
  • Of course, all purchases and charges made are real and will be processed. It’s the real deal.

If you have questions or want to engage in more in-depth conversation with us about Cauzoom and the future of the platform, please feel free to reach out. Our phone number is 617 674 2717, and we’re around during east coast (U.S.) business hours. Stay tuned – we’ll be blogging about new features of the platform in the days to come. It’s not philanthropy, it’s a WHOLE NEW THING. It’s Cauzoom.

Web Presents: Benton Library

WHO: The Everett C. Benton Library

WHAT: A place to update supporters, collect donations and manage easily

The historic Benton Library in Belmont, MA was built over 80 years ago and as far as we can tell that was also when their website was built. When the library’s hours of service were cut from fifteen to five hours per week in 2006 – and later closed in 2009 – concerned residents formed the Friends of the Benton Library, Inc. The goal was to reopen the Benton and run it as a community organization. Their fundraising efforts were successful and in May 2011 they reopened the Benton Library to the community. They did this partly through their project on Cauzoom as well as a much needed web presence boost from our crew.

Benton Library told us they needed a site they could use to update members on upcoming events, programs and information. They also wanted an easy way for supporters to donate and volunteer as well as the ability for multiple users to update content. The Cauzoom team was able to build something functional and easy to understand for these web novices. After a meeting and a few phone calls they were up an running. It was great to work with the Benton and help bring their library into the 21st!

It’s critical to have a quality web presence. Not only will supporters find you through the web, more often than not they’ll make decisions about supporting you based on what they see online. We know how hard it can be to set one up, let alone one that’s easy to manage and integrated with the latest services.

Web Presents: Watertown Cooperative Nursery School

WHO: Watertown Cooperative Nursery School

WHAT: Create content, Facebook integration

Watertown Cooperative Nursery School’s goal is to help children feel good about
themselves and their accomplishments by encouraging individual creativity, group participation, and problem solving. Opened in 1952 by a group of parents the school has shown itself as one of the leading Coops in the Boston area. Their curriculum encourages healthy social, physical, and cognitive skills, but is first and foremost designed for fun. They came to Cauzoom to help them design a new website that they could use to update parents, create content easily and provide information for perspective families.

The Cauzoom crew were able to build them a WordPress based site that did all they needed in an easy to use, hassle-free way. Cauzoom created two separate photo galleries; one for parents and one for the public. Aside from integrating their site with several different ways to donate we were also able to set them up with some social plugins for their Facebook page. Easy. Simple. Clean.

It’s critical to have a quality web presence. Not only will supporters find you through the web, more often than not they’ll make decisions about supporting you based on what they see online. We know how hard it can be to set one up, let alone one that’s easy to manage and integrated with the latest services.

Greatest Hits: Benton Library and an Entire Community!

Quarterbacks: The Citizens of Belmont, MA

The Cauz: Reopen Benton Library

Noteworthy: No Experience Necessary

In their own words: Before Cauzoom, we had no idea what we were doing. But Cauzoom gave this community the tools to organize and ultimately help save our library. – Belmont Citizen

It takes a village to raise an 80 year old library out of extinction and bring it back to the community. That’s the saying, right? The historic Benton Branch Library was part of the Belmont Public Library system for seventy-five years. Despite the town’s best efforts the library faced financial woes and closed in 2009.

A community group was formed, volunteers were at the ready and the citizens of Belmont fought to keep the Benton alive. Although they had been successful in getting the city to allow them to take the library over, the job was not complete. Funding was scarce and for the organizers the biggest challenge was inexperience. None of them had a background in fundraising, or knew what it took to mobilize supporters for a project.

Having tried to save the library in the past, they knew that they needed a substantial campaign that would leave a lasting impact on the community.  While the response for giving had been largely positive, the community wanted to ensure that every dollar was stretched to maximum potential and donors knew exactly what their money was going to buy. Their solution was to launch a campaign on Cauzoom to fund a portion of the costs. They even got a local gym to sponsor their fundraising efforts by selling gift certificates alongside the project with a portion going to the goal.

They rallied their efforts in one central location on Cauzoom and within the 30 day time-frame they were able to meet AND exceed their goal. The library has been open ever since and the community couldn’t be happier. Needless to say, the citizens of Belmont rock!

Greatest Hits: Alex Seriy and Top Banana

Quarterback: Alex Seriy

The Cauz: New Desks for Top Banana Classroom

Noteworthy: Share, Update, Repeat

In their own words: Cauzoom! is not just a website for non-profits. The company and its team became our partner during our month-long fundraising project last summer. Cauzoom set us up for success for the get-go and helped keep the momentum going all the way until the project was funded. We can’t wait to work with Cauzoom! again. -Alex

We were lucky enough to have Top Banana Education Foundation as one of the first organizations to use the Cauzoom platform. Top Banana’s top banana is Alex Seriy and providing afterschool math tutoring for kiddos is the easy part for him. He combines his passion for teaching with the secrets of his trade as a Computer Scientist and software engineer (whoa!) to realize his life-long dream of educating children. Alex is methodical and calculated and might I say, BRILLIANT so when he launched his project on Cauzoom he made sure he had a plan. That plan: share the crap outta this thing.

Over the course of 30 days Alex and his gang of math moms, dads and supporters were able to raise enough cash to buy desks for their growing classrooms. The funds Top Banana raised came from the purchase of gift cards to Whole Foods, in fact 100% of the funds raised came from purchases. Alex told us about how excited his supporters were to be able to buy a gift card in order to support the project.

What made this project so great was how enthusiastic Alex was. Each week he emailed Top Banana supporters to let them know how the project was progressing and reminding them that they need to hit their goal. A strong quarterback and a math whiz! Needless to say, Alex rocks!

Greatest Hits: Troy Corley and ASAP

Quarterback: Troy Corley

The Cauz: Help Buy 10 Starter Kits for New ASAP Chapters

Noteworthy: See a need, fill a need

In their own words: Cauzoom gave our ASAP Asperger’s Social Support community organization the opportunity to raise needed funds without having an official non-profit status. With that money in hand we’ve been able to establish groups in different geographic areas, provide them with the tools to support the group and serve more people.  Cauzoom Rocks! – Troy

Out in California there’s a Superhero. A Superwoman! Her name is Troy and aside from being a business woman, writer and mother she is also the founder of the organization ASAP (Asperger’s Support Adolescents Plus). She saw a need in her community after her daughter was diagnosed with Autism. Instead of sitting around waiting for someone to do something about it, she did! See a need, fill a need.

Troy’s organization, ASAP, facilitates social support groups for teens and young adults with Asperger’s Syndrome or high functioning Autism. Troy runs this organization as a community group with no 501c3 status, but that hasn’t slowed her down. In its first 5 years the program has grown, a lot. ASAP spread into different towns and cities with different Troys heading up each chapter. She needed a place where all her supporters could come and help her expand the organization. She set up a project to help launch these new chapters and the results were amazing!

Troy was able to gain support for her project from the entire Aspergers community by using twitter. Using her large social network Troy was able to take the project to a staggering 169% complete, allowing her to do even more than she set out to do. Now with three chapters of ASAP up-and-running it looks like ASAP will be coming back for another round! Needless to say, Troy rocks!

Greatest Hits: Kristen Dukat and Support of Scott

Kristen Dukat

Self Portrait by Kristen

Quarterback: Kristen Dukat

The Cauz: One Month’s House Payment for Friend Undergoing Chemotherapy

Noteworthy: Expert Community Mobilization

In their own words: I was truly amazed at the exceptional service and quality of the project funded by Cauzoom.  From start to finish, I was thoroughly impressed.  Our project was live and operational within 24 hours of our request, and donating or purchasing gift cards was simple and flawless.  The follow up emails from Cauzoom on how to generate more giving was also extremely helpful.  Thanks to Cauzoom, a man fighting cancer could rest a little easier having his mortgage payment taken of. Thank you! – Kristen

When faced with terrible news some people go into shock, others go to Facebook. That’s exactly what Kristen did when she learned her friend was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. The group SoS (Support of Scott) was born and Kristen was on a mission to spread the word. Scott, a local artist, former high school teacher and all around great dude, is a well known staple in his community so people flocked to the the Facebook page in support. In the first two days Kristen was able to bring in more than 200 members. That’s great, but now what? The group was confused as to how they could use all the support from the Facebook page and turn it into real impact for Scott and his family.

Within the first week of the page’s creation Kristen came to Cauzoom and set up a project to help pay for one month’s house payment for Scott while he underwent treatment. She knew she only had 30 days so she took the ball and ran. She gathered support from the Facebook page, other local artists, teachers, community members and former students of Scott (like myself) to chip in.  $10 here, $20 there, a couple of offer purchases and it 30 days they did it.

Not only did they hit their goal they TOTALLY exceeded it! Having that passionate base of supporters to draw from was great for Kristen, she was able to post updates on the success of the project on the Facebook page and the project became a very social experience. Needless to say, Kristen rocks.

Support Local Causes: Hay is for Horses

Sometimes as Bostonians we forget that there is an entire state out there. A state with woods and rivers and hills and horses, yes horses and they aren’t just used for patrolling the common!

Out in a place called Boxford (where?) there’s an organization putting all that beautiful land to good use. Windrush Farm combines the beautiful atmosphere, skilled and trained staff and those aforementioned horses to inspire their clients to realize they are capable of more than they may believe. Windrush came to us last week with a great project in mind. Help feed their therapy horses for three months. Very simple to understand: horses need food, these programs need horses.

The joy that these programs bring is… alright look here’s the thing, all of this text is almost pointless. All you have to do is take a look at the video below, it should answer all of your questions. Warning: it’s about to get adorable.

The Cauzoom Story

Cauzoom is a startup in Cambridge, MA. We incorporated in April and launched in May of 2011; we started working with merchant sponsors in October. We’re a social enterprise committed to the idea that we need to be bold in finding new ways of achieving social outcomes – both within and outside the nonprofit sector – and that technology holds the key to many of these ideas.

We see ourselves as an online community funding tool, channeling community passion towards both business value and social good. We think that technology and social media gives us a new way to aggregate the support of groups that share common goals – whether they share a geographic location or a shared idea. Healthy communities also mean healthy businesses, so we’re intent on delivering true business value to our merchant partners. (This Fall we’ll be unveiling a new product that allows neighborhood businesses to participate in Cauzoom projects – very exciting for us!)

Cauzoom came out of an incubator called Opus Two Collaborative set up in 2010 with the idea of creating innovative web-based companies. During our time with Opus Two, it became clear that there were exciting opportunities emerging for what we call the “cause-related organization” sector. Shifts in perceptions and behaviors – especially around social media – were suggesting whole new ways to bring groups together and challenging long-held assumptions about philanthropy and community support. We set up Cauzoom to explore that potential.

While our intention was to concentrate on the greater Boston area at first, as of November we’ve funded more than a dozen projects in ten states and processed more than $20,000 in transactions. Our early experiments with merchant partners continue, but so far the result is undeniable: an energetic community can come together to fund commonly-held goals, and are happy to support businesses in order to meet their goals. Brands like Whole Foods, Target, and Starbucks have seen significant results in very short amounts of time, not to mention savvy companies like Naked Pizza, Massage Envy, and Kabloom.

Because our recent projects have featured the purchase of gift cards to support projects, many people have asked about how the process works. Generally our merchant partners ship us a supply of cards to distribute as they are purchased so we can send them out within a few days of them being ordered. There’s a tool on the site that shows you when you purchased your gift card and when you can expect it (or when it was shipped). As we grow we’re speeding up our fulfillment process – we’ve already cut down the wait time from 4-5 days to 2 or 3. We’re also rolling out online vouchers in December (Groupon-style) that supporters can print and bring in with them to a location. Online redemption should follow shortly.

When a project reaches its deadline, we wrap up all the contributions (sometimes we have to chase down errant credit cards) and issue a check to the cause partner in the amount that they raised.  100% of funds raised go to the project – we take our fee from our merchant partners. Our project-funding system is “all or nothing,” not a donation system, so if a project doesn’t raise enough money to accomplish its objectives it isn’t funded. That said, earlier this month we rolled out a feature that allows contributors the option of sending their contribution directly to the organization whether or not the project hits its goal – and over 90% of our contributors have chosen this option since it began.

We’re firm believers in the idea that businesses should be nimble and listen to their customers, so to that end we’ll be rolling out new services targeted at helping our cause partners take advantage of the online world more completely. The opportunities are compelling, and now is the time to experiment and  find out what works.

We’re also very excited about the possibilities of working with groups who already have communities dedicated to certain causes. We’re experimenting with employee-benefit programs, services for community managers, and promotional services for online businesses. The possibilities are enormous.

Cauzoom is a small company with only three employees operating out of incubator space in West Cambridge, Massaschusetts. We’re privately-held and bootstrapping ourselves along. Working for a startup is sometimes tricky, but we can’t imagine a better way to spend our time than helping committed groups achieve their goals.

Please feel free to contact us at any time – we’d be eager to chat with you!

Support Local Causes: Archventures and the Garden Shed

Stephen Cote is building a shed for you.

As founder of grassroots design-build nonprofit Archventures in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, Stephen is an experienced builder with sawdust running through his veins. He’s also his group’s marketing manager, development director, public relations evangelist and webmaster – all rolled into one. One of his jobs is to tell the world how Archventures is working for its community.

“We’ve been very busy recently,” Cote says. “But I spend the bulk of my time with a hammer in my hand – I don’t have a lot of time left over to increase our visibility in the community.”

Created just last year, Archventures helps design and build structures and improvements for nonprofits around Boston – ranging from courtyards to entryways to garden sheds – and provides hands-on learning opportunities for architecture and urban design students.

Archventures uses pro bono services from an array of local architects and builders, and uses volunteer labor wherever it makes sense. The group can get beautiful, environmentally sound projects executed for a fraction of commercial prices. But he still has to buy supplies, and for that he needs dollars.

“We’re doing the best we can,” Cote says. “I just wish people nearby knew how important their support can be – for local organizations like ours.”

Stephen’s problem is a common one. Neighborhood nonprofits and community organizations are often working the hardest, doing more with less, and having the greatest real impact in local communities. But when people think of whom to support – especially during the holidays – they think of well-funded nonprofits like the American Red Cross or Susan G. Komen Foundation. Local organizations get bypassed.

The internet changes all that. That’s why we started Cauzoom: to help cause-related organizations use new technologies to connect with support and advance their mission. The cause-related space may be one of the last industries to be transformed by recent technological innovations – but when it happens, the result will disproportionately benefit local causes.

Boston takes care of its own. Everyone knows that. And now the power of social media and the internet makes it easy to support our neighborhoods in new ways. This holiday we’ll be leading a campaign to focus on supporting local causes, and we invite the rest of Boston to join us. We eat local and shop local – shouldn’t we support local causes too?
